SOMTO ONYEJEKWE
Somtoo Onyejekwe is a graduate of Music Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He proceeded to study Igbo music and musical instruments at Ichoku Academy under the tutelage of Gerald Eze. He currently serves as the Orchestral Director and Music Technologist at Ichoku Academy. At Ichoku Academy, he majors in the construction of the Uboaka (thumbpiano), an indigenous Igbo musical Instrument that faces extinction. He has become a vibrant mentor to the younger children in various Nigerian communities as he teaches Igbo musical instruments such as Igba (drums), Uboaka (thumbpiano), Ngedelegwu (xylophone), Ekwe (wooden drum), and Oja (Igbo flute).
Somtoo is a multi-instrumentalist in both Western and Igbo musical instruments, and he has directed the Ichoku Orchestra which is made up of children, playing Indigenous Nigerian instruments, in concerts across Nigeria, particularly in the southeastern region. He recently trained and directed the Ichoku Orchestra during Egwuregwu Concert of Ichoku Academy, held at Awka (Nigeria) in collaboration with Awka Window on America, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. He is also a known DJ in Awka, Anambra State. With mastery of the Indigenous Igbo drum, Igba, he has performed on various occasions with the Ichoku Academy sEnsemble, including the Uwa Mgbede Concert in Abuja, Egwuregwu Concert at Center for Memories, Enugu, and other concert events in Porthacourt, and Asaba, Nigeria.
